POST-PARAMETRIC MANIFESTO

Master Thesis A.A. 2010/2011

Student: Roberto Naboni
Supervisor: Ingrid Paoletti

In the last years the architectural design community has experienced a progressive paradigm shift, mainly due to the diffusion of parametric tools and computation-based design strategies within international practices and top leading schools. The making of architecture is radically changing, and the need of new cultural and methodological references is now fundamental.

The Post-Parametric Manifesto offers a comprehensive overview of mature post-digital approaches, in which cutting-edge parametric techniques are not intended as mere speculations but conceived systematically within a holistic approach. The book tackles a set of trans-disciplinary influences that have determined a new design sensibility, mainly as a consequence of a new outlook on nature. The diffusion of studies on morphogenetic properties of natural phenomena and organisms through computational tools enables a design workflow that integrates notions from different fields, such as biology, mathematics of complex systems, and materialist philosophy.

These theoretical foundations, combined with the use of algorithmic software, allow innovative architectural investigations, result of a parametric associative environment bringing to the progressive and emergent formation of a novel built environment. The text questions critically the cultural influences of this approach, and studies methods and design actualization in the different scales, also considering the process of digital fabrication and the use of innovative construction technology.

The Post-Parametric Manifesto constitutes the synthesis of a critical understanding of the actual paradigm and sets an original scenario for an approach to architectural design able to combine computation within sustainable perspective, and responding to the social needs of the contemporary post-digital age.
